Candythief first emerged in association with Fence records in 2005, and now return to present a third
collection of songs. PARTISAN! Drawing on alternative, folk, rock and indie influences, the songs are melody-driven and eclectic in style, lyrical and direct, coloured by the unusual song structures typical of Candythief arrangements. Thematically, it deals in an uplifting way with the possibility that modern culture has sold us a bit of a lemon.
Candtyhief was started by singer-songwriter Diana de Cabarrus on vocals/guitar/sandwiches, and at full strength comprises Jem Doulton on drums, Jason Dickinson on fiddle and Jason Simpson on electric & double bass.
Edited highlights include sessions on 6 music, radio play from this and previous releases on BBC radio 1,BBC radio 2, BBC Scotland, a bunch of internet radios; tunes on film soundtracks, one of which won a prize at Cannes. Recent single Song for David was Lauren Laverne's download of the day on her BBC 6 music show. What more persuasion do you need that it's worth listening to for heavensake! Unfortunately Jarvis Cocker, Diana's geek hero, has never played anything. YET.
On record and live, Candythief are refreshingly distinctive and unusual, supplying an invigoratingly vital alternative version of the female fronted band.
Diana has also recorded a collaboration with Domino’s finest, Adem, co-written and guested on a selection of albums from lush ambient electronica (Neotropic), grinding post punk (Huw Stephens-tipped band Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences) to post primal scream Scottish indie (Viva Stereo) and has been invited to play live with everyone from Malcolm Middleton, Richard James, James Yorkston, Adrian Crowley, Pete Molinari and King Creosote to The Mystery Jets, Razorlight and The Subways.
Candythief was voted 2nd (after Bjork and before PJ Harvey and Amy Winehouse) in the Is This Music? End of year poll 07 in the category of best female fronted act, & was the only unsigned act to be shortlisted.
